Teaching in a Multicultural Classroom

Graduate-Level Credit / Non-Credit Hours

Course Description

This course is designed to help educators build a classroom structure where all students feel empowered and included in the classroom environment. Through the use of videos, readings, personal reflection, and online forum questions, participants will experience the multicultural classroom, as well as learn methods to implement strategies in their own classroom. Participants will learn to shape and maintain learning conditions that facilitate a multicultural perspective during instruction, including how to identify and promote diversity, confront stereo-types, and be introduced to how to create culturally aware lesson plans and activities.

Global Goals of the Course

  1. To examine current research in the area of best practice in multicultural teaching (NBPTS 3,4)
  2. To develop an understanding of the need for effective multicultural learning strategies in today’s classroom (NBPTS 1,3,4)
  3. To analyze current multicultural instructional practices in order to create engaged practices to better support student learning (NBPTS 1,3,4)
  4. To explore possible applications of multicultural teaching models in the classroom (NBPTS 1,2,3,4)
  5. To explore research-proven methods of lesson plan development in a multicultural classroom (NBTS 1,2,3,4)
  6. To synthesize best practice in culturally relevant teaching research and classroom applications to become multiculturally competent (NBPTS 2,3,4)
