Sheltered English Immersion (SEI): Best Practices for English Learners

Course Description

This course is designed to help educators provide a high-quality and equitable educational experience for English learners (ELs) that values and nurtures cultural diversity. Whether in-person or virtually, course participants will discover how to provide meaningful and rigorous lessons and assessments while facilitating an environment in which the social and emotional needs of ELs are nurtured. Course participants will explore research-based effective educational practices based on ten guiding principles or language development to maximize the potential of Els in schools and beyond graduation.

Global Goals of the Course

To deepen and/or apply the content and skills of the teacher’s existing professional knowledge base by meeting the following global goals of this course:

  1. To develop an understanding of the need for an equitable education for all English learners
  2. To examine current research-based instructional and assessment strategies for English learners
  3. To explore best practices of serving Els – including forming effective partnerships with families and community organizations
  4. To synthesize tools and resources designed to enhance learning and success of English learners

The new content, as well as what was reinforced by the articles and videos, was what I liked most about this class. The feedback from the instructor, as well as the offering of links for more resources from the instructor, was extremely helpful and helped me positively view this course.
