Phonics and Beyond: Foundational Literacy Skills Across Grade Levels - #SPC23024

Course Description

The research is clear - phonics is a critical component of effectively teaching students how to read and write. This course is designed to give participants a deep understanding of the key characteristics of, and the essential steps involved with phonics instruction. Course participants will be prepared to put the elements of effective literacy instruction - including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension - into practice to help students across grade levels develop and strengthen their literacy skills.

Throughout the course, participants will engage in interactive dialogue through a variety of mediums to receive valuable feedback to reflect on from their instructor.  All formative and summative projects are reviewed and graded, and feedback from the instructor will be provided allowing the participant to enhance their portfolio of educational tools/resources to impact their classroom or school community.

To deepen and/or apply the content and skills of the teacher’s existing professional knowledge base by meeting the following global goals of the course:

  1. Evaluate course-related research, literature, content, and strategies and formulate connections and applications to educator practice.
  2. Develop learning experiences based on the elements of high-quality foundational literacy skills instruction.
  3. Incorporate the components of effective phonics and literacy instruction into one’s professional practices.
  4. Design an effective learning environment that incorporates essential best practices for the inclusive classroom.
  5. Develop standards-based lessons that are universally designed to meet the needs of all learners in the inclusive classroom.
