English Learners and Students with Special Needs: Maximizing Potential in the Traditional and Virtual Classrooms - #SPC21017

Course Description

This course is designed to help K-12 educators provide equitable access to a high-quality educational experience for English learners (ELs), students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and students with 504 plans. Educators will discover how to design meaningful and rigorous lessons, implement academic and behavioral accommodations and modifications, and select appropriate assessments that gauge student learning and steer instructional practices. Educators will also focus on facilitating an environment in which diversity is valued and the social and emotional needs of students are nurtured - in both the traditional (physical) and virtual classroom settings. Finally, forming effective partnerships between schools, families, and community organizations in order to maximize the potential of ELs and students with special needs will be highlighted.

Global Goals of the Course

To deepen and/or apply the content and skills of the teacher’s existing professional knowledge base by meeting the following global goals of the course:

  1. To recognize the need for access to an equitable education for ELs and students with special needs.
  2. To examine current research-based instructional and assessment strategies appropriate for ELs and students with special needs.
  3. To analyze current research-based academic and behavior accommodations and modifications.
  4. To implement strategies and activities designed to promote success of ELs and students with special needs.
  5. To research professional resources focused on maximizing the potential of ELs and students with special needs.
