Classroom Calendar Connections – October 2019

October is a busy month, full of valuable learning opportunities for students and educators. Provided below are some note-worthy resources and activities to recognize a few of the many events this month.
National Bullying Prevention Awareness
The first Monday of every October kicks off National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month and is known as “World Day of Bullying Prevention” (October 7, 2019). Schools and communities around the world are encouraged to wear blue to represent solidarity against bullying and cyberbullying. This website, Stomp Out Bullying, provides student-led anti-bullying weekly themes to implement during October including:
- Make friends with someone you don’t know at school
- STAND UP for others week
- Week of inclusion

Fire Prevention Week
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12). The NFPA provides a plethora of fire safety resources for educators including lesson plans, activities, videos, tip sheets, and games on their website.
Here are a few highlights:
- Did Mrs. O’Leary’s cow really kick over a lantern that started the great Chicago fire of 1871? What did we learn about fire safety and prevention from the most famous fire in history? Find out in this engaging video – Chicago Fire of 1871.
- Learn about some of the odd legends about firefighting and how firefighting technology has evolved in this video – Firefighting’s Weird History and Fascinating Future.
- Encourage students to work with their families on a fire escape plan at home by providing this activity - How to Make a Home Fire Escape Plan (also available in Spanish), this brief video – Fire Safety Minute, along with this Smoke Alarm Safety Sheet .
- The youngest learners will enjoy listening to and watching this story time video: The Story of Sparky the Fire Dog.
ADHD Awareness
The theme of this year is ADHD Myths and Facts – Know the Difference.
- Start by reviewing common myths and facts about ADHD.
- Take a look at how people have represented their feelings and experiences associated with ADHD through these original works of art.
- Read and share a few of these ADHD stories about successes and struggles of ADHD by real people.
- Discover five teacher-recommended strategies to support students with ADHD in this past blog post.

Dyslexia Awareness
According to Mayo Clinic, Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language. Click on the live link to read more about the symptoms, risk factors, and complications associated with dyslexia.
The International Dyslexia Association provides this comprehensive handbook, Dyslexia in the Classroom: What Every Teacher Needs to Know, which includes the following topics:
- Signs and symptoms of dyslexia

- Components of effective reading instruction
- Screen, evaluation, and diagnosis
Getting out of bed in the morning, texting with friends, and even lunchtime – dyslexia can impact a person’s life in surprising ways.
