Creating a Balanced and Systematic Literacy Approach to Span K-12 Classrooms - #GMS20001

Course Description

This course is designed to provide educators an overview and cohesive approach to literacy components to be able to use in a K-12 classroom. Participants in this course will examine current research as well as explore a variety of strategies that can be implemented in order to increase students’ reading ability. Research will include exploration of literacy as it pertains to fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and comprehension. Participants will reflect on their personal experiences, evaluate their current approach, and formulate a new literacy plan for implementation. Participants will leave the course with a year-long plan that includes a systematic approach to all areas of literacy. 

Global Goals of the Course

  1. To examine current research in the area of best practice literacy strategies (NBPTS 3,4)
  2. To develop an understanding of the need for cohesive and systematic literacy strategies in today’s classroom (NBPTS 1,3,4)
  3. To analyze current instructional practices in order to create engaged practices to better support student learning as it pertains to different areas of literacy (NBPTS 1,3,4)
  4. To explore possible applications of literacy rich environments in the classroom (NBPTS 1,2,3,4)
  5. To synthesize best practice in culturally relevant teaching research and classroom applications (NBPTS 2,3,4)
